Definition of terms
 
backslope The slope on the high side of a benched track; should be less than 45 to encourage re-vegetation
benching Benching is required where tracks are routed on hillslopes which exceed 15 berm

To keep water moving across the benched
track, remove that berm
berm A ridge of soil or stones, which develops on the low side of track during development or subsequent use which prevents water from draining across the track. Berms should always be removed to reduce down-track drainage and subsequent erosion
braiding The duplication of tracks by walkers bypassing roughness, obstacles or wet patches
checkpoint A location on a walk - e.g. a track junction or similar - where a decision is required; a simple map provides guidance (see )
